Community Youth Chorus announces new island rehearsal space

By Staff | Jul 17, 2013

The Community Youth Chorus is holding rehearsals on Aug. 5 for island children looking to perform and learn about music.

Since last September the chorus has brought together young singers to perform at different venues across Southwest Florida. Rehearsals are held at community centers in Lehigh Acres, Fort Myers, and Cape Coral, but the chorus recently announced new rehearsal space at BIG ARTS on 900 Dunlop Road in Sanibel.

Debby Dorr, director of the Community Youth Chorus, said she is looking for singers on the island interested in attending the first rehearsal in August. There is no tuition to participate and singers from 7-17 are accepted.

The 43 members of the chorus rehearse at their respective locations and come together for performances across the region, including the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center, Butterfly Estates, Cape Coral Yacht Club, Alliance for the Arts, SWFL Reading Festival, Healthpark Medical Center, The Salvation Army and Bell Tower Shops.

The chorus recently performed at a special birthday party for children at The Salvation Army Homeless Shelter in Fort Myers.

“It gives the kids an opportunity to sing in a lot of different public places,” said Dorr. “They learn harmony and how to sing.”

Dorr said she was excited about the new rehearsal location at BIG ARTS where children will practice every Monday from 4-5 p.m.

Concerts will also be held on the island, she said, for families who might not be able to travel to performances in other areas.

Dorr, a music teacher with 40-years of experience, said she started the Community Youth Chorus so children interested in singing had a place to learn and practice. A similar children’s chorus program through the Southwest Florida Symphony had been discontinued and Dorr wanted the Community Youth Chorus to fill that void.
