Showers couldn’t keep crowds away for Independence Day
Rainfall made for a soggy July 4 afternoon, but that didn’t keep the island community from celebrating our nation’s birthday.
While the Independence Day Parade and 34th Annual Road Rally enjoyed sunny, clear skies, the storm clouds and rain delayed some people from showing up to the community celebration at The Dunes Golf and Tennis Club, which was scheduled for 6-9 p.m. But, by the time the rain stopped the crowds gathered around the golf course for the Zambelli fireworks show.
Leilani Sivsov, general manager at The Dunes, said the turnout wasn’t effected by the weather.
“I am very happy. The showers delayed the festivities, but right now we’re having a great turnout despite the weather,” said Sivsov.
The community celebration was packed full by 8 p.m. and attendees enjoyed music, food, drinks, and bounce houses for the children. The fireworks show began a few minutes before 9 p.m.
Amy Owen, a visitor to Sanibel Island, had watched the island fireworks show for the last decade, even when they were over the causeway. She said the rain didn’t deter her from attending the celebration.
“We sat in the car for a long time,” she said.
Karl and Gloria Renz said their son was visiting from the east coast and they wanted to bring him to a fireworks show. They also waited for the rain to stop before they arrived.
“We waited it out like everybody else,” he said. “This is the rainy season.”
Renz and his wife have attended the celebration in previous years and thought the golf course was a perfect place to celebrate the holiday.
“This is beautiful and we will come again,” he said.
