After nearly six months of renovations, the Sundial Beach Resort and Spa opened to the public last week with live entertainment and drink specials.

The $5 million renovation project began this January and for the first time parts of the resort are now open to the general public rather than only guests of the hotel. The Danny Morgan Band performed in a soft opening last week, plus the resort offered two daily happy hour specials at Turtles from 3-5 p.m. and the Sea Breeze Cafe from 5-7 p.m.

For anyone walking into the new Sundial, the most obvious change is to the main lobby which was updated with new furniture, light fixtures and redesigned to open the space and improve the view of the beach. Beyond the lobby is the Sea Breeze Cafe which now features an outside deck, overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, and seating for customers ordering drinks or food.

“This whole area has been entirely transformed,” said Paul Cuppy, food and beverage manager at Sundial. “This is the only place on the island that has a view like this. It’s exciting for people from the Northeast or Midwest.”

Cuppy said the main dining room was essentially gutted and rebuilt with an open, modern design in mind for natural light. Office spaces adjacent to the dining room were also renovated into private dining rooms. An outside terrace was built for the banquet room on the third floor to host wedding receptions or larger celebrations, and that also faces the water.

“It was very closed and dark, where now we are more upgraded and presenting what people expect to find in a resort,” said Cuppy.

Most of the renovations are complete except for the new six-treatment room spa, which is slated to open later this year.

The Danny Morgan Band will perform Friday and Saturday nights from 6-9 p.m. at the Sea Breeze Cafe, and pool side entertainment is available at Turtles every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 1-4 p.m. for the resort’s “Sanibel Summerfest.”
