Open house to benefit Oklahoma tornado relief
Planning to buy a home? Just want to see what beautiful homes are out there? You might want to head up McGregor Boulevard this weekend.
You’ll definitely get your money’s worth, and help a great cause in the process. Just look for the home with the Oklahoma state and Red Cross flags adorning it.
Gloria Tate, of Raso Realty in Cape Coral, is holding a fundraising open house this Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. at a vintage home at 10671 McGregor Blvd. in Fort Myers.
Tate will donate $10 for everybody who comes in to see the home in the visitors’ names, and visitors are welcome to donate money from their own pockets.
Tate, one of the Cape’s “pioneers” and a former city council member, said she was touched by the tornados in Oklahoma and the death and devastation they caused and wanted to help in the way only a real estate agent could.
“I talked to some clients who were from Oklahoma and said I should take donations at an open house. I called the Red Cross and they said they’d be happy to do it,” Tate said. “They gave me signs and banners and posters and we were on our way.”
The goal is to raise about $1,000, but that depends on how many people show up and register, Tate said.
There will be light refreshments at the house, which will be adorned with state flags, as the yard is deep and narrow.
Tate concedes that, as a Realtor, another goal is to sell the house, but added it’s a property that people need to see because it’s one of the few homes in the area with an indoor pool.
“It’s kind of like going through a model experience without it being a model,” Tate said. “It’s a vintage home with a walk-up veranda. It has a lot of rooms because it built out over a number of years.”
The fireplace was built in 1957, and it features an indoor grill and chorizo floors that have been refinished, and a four-car garage, Tate said. The original owner of the home owned the first pest control company in Fort Myers.
“The goal is to bring awareness to the need of those people in Oklahoma and also to showcase my property,” Tate said. “Doing those helps people that I know and indirectly and it’s paramount on people’s minds.”
