City improves lightning system at parks

By Staff | May 23, 2013

In an effort to enhance the current Lightning Prediction System at island parks, audible horns were added to the system on Monday, May 20, at Community Park, 2231 Periwinkle Way, and the Ball Field Complex, 3840 Sanibel Captiva Road.

The system now has two warning mechanisms as a storm approaches – a visual warning (orange flashing strobes) and an audible warning. A horn will sound once for 15 seconds for “red alert” and sound three times for five seconds for “all clear.” The system will be operational from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Prior to installing the horns, city staff worked with J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge staff and the Sanibel Natural Resources Department director to observe wildlife during system tests. No effects or disruptions on wildlife were noted.
