Kiwanis, Realtors update CHR playground
Sanibel has always been a community of willing hands and generous hearts, and this story is just one more demonstration of how well this works.
For the board and staff of Community Housing & Resources (CHR), finding funds for maintenance on 74 rental units in 11 campuses on Sanibel is an ongoing challenge. CHR administers housing for 150 island residents, serving a local work force for island businesses and ensuring economic diversity in our community.
CHR relies on private donations to supplement income received from renters which doesn’t always cover the costs of insuring and maintaining their properties. With several young families living in rental housing on Mahogany Way, there was a real need to improve the children’s playground, and no funds to do it, but Sanibel stepped up.
The Sanibel-Captiva Kiwanis Club funded the new equipment and mulch, while CHR board member George Campean and volunteers Dave Wolf and Dave Bennett constructed and installed the new equipment. CHR Board member and realtor Robyn Moran contacted Cathy Gerasin, who chairs the Sanibel-Captiva Board of Realtors Committee on Communications and Public Relations. Together they reached out to the island realtor community.
One Saturday morning in early May, so many members showed up to help spread mulch that the work was all done by around 9 a.m.
“It was a great project. Thanks to all who helped,” Gerasin said.
“This is a fine example of how the community comes together to support our residents,” said CHR executive director Kelly Collini. “With 15 children living at Mahogany Way the playground is more important than ever.”
CHR is a non-profit organization that partners with the City of Sanibel to provide affordable housing for families and individuals who work in and/or serve the community of Sanibel.
