Car show fund-raiser to benefit Cape Coral girl

By Staff | May 10, 2013

A “car, truck and bike spectacular” has been set for Saturday to benefit a Cape Coral girl fighting a rare form of cancer.

“Tessa’s Show” will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 11 at Dempsey’s Diner, 1140 Ceitus Parkway, Cape Coral.

The fund-raiser will help support the child, whose last name is being withheld to help protect her privacy, and her family.

Tessa, 12, was diagnosed with an extremely rare Wilms tumor two weeks before Christmas and has since undergone two surgeries, chemo, and radiation treatments. The chemotherapy treatments are continuing.

“We believe in miracles,” said Tessa in a prepared statement, adding after her treatments are complete, she is looking forward to getting back to school and spending time with her friends.

“I know I have a hard road in front of me, but I’m willing to do all the hard work to get better,” she said.

Tessa is a remarkable child, still thinking of others first, event organizers said.

“Shortly after being diagnosed she told her mother that she wanted to get her hair cut and donate it to Locks of Love in the hope that it would do some good,” said Minette Langston, one of the organizers. “Her comment was, ‘I’m going to lose it anyway, it might as well help somebody.’ I cried. How many 12-year-olds think that way?”

The community is invited to Tessa’s Show. For spectators, admission is free.

Live music and karaoke will be featured in addition to the vehicle extravaganza. There also will be door prizes, raffles, 50/50 drawings, trophies and refreshments with Dempsey’s Diner offering food specials, as well – just $5 for a cheeseburger, chips and drink, and $4 for a Sabrett hot dog, chips and drinks.

For those looking to take part in the car, truck and bike spectacular, “all makes, models and years” are welcome and it “doesn’t matter if your car is old or new, classic or modern,” organizers said in a statement announcing the event.

“All owners of all makes and models are welcome to exhibit their ride and qualify for a chance win Best Car In Show,” the release states. “The registration fee is $20. All proceeds to benefit Tessa and the Children’s Hospital at Healthpark in Fort Myers.”

Cars may be pre-registered by contacting event organizers Jeanette Baldwin, 239-464-4982, or Minette Langston, 239-223-8875, or online at: supporttessasantagate.blogspot.com/tessa-cancer-treatment-update.html . Vehicles also may be registered day of show.

Langston thanked Dempsey’s for providing the venue.

“They have been incredibly supportive and amazing,” she said. “I’ve done other car shows and they have just been amazing.”

She also thanked Around the Clock Fitness for donating some of its parking space and all of the sponsors which, at press time, included Sam Galloway Ford, Tow Boat US, Orr Insurance Group, Nor-tech, Florida Hot Rod and Hogs and the Gulfshore Mustang Club and South Florida Plumbing.

While the program book has been printed, additional sponsorships are welcome as are donations.
