Congress Jewelers sponsors 15th Habitat home
Congress Jewelers is sponsoring its 15th Habitat for Humanity home. Staff members spent a day raising the walls of the latest home in east Fort Myers.
“Supporting Habitat for Humanity is one way we can give back to our community,” said proprietor Scot Congress. “We look forward to getting our team together for a day of work that is so unlike our usual routine. Seeing the progress we make in one day helps us appreciate the difference volunteers can make.”
Volunteer labor and donations of money and materials help Habitat make homeownership an affordable reality with interest-free mortgages and monthly payments that are less than 30 percent of the homeowner’s income. Habitat homeowners must qualify financially for the program; save $1,200 toward closing costs; attend a series of educational classes focusing on homeownership, budgeting and home maintenance; and complete 250 hours of sweat equity by volunteering at Habitat.
“The need for decent, affordable housing in our area has never been greater,” said Donny Andrews, chairman of the Habitat board. “We are very fortunate to have the ongoing support of individual donors, businesses, civic organizations, churches and volunteers who make the life-changing effect of homeownership available to low-income families.”
Habitat for Humanity of Lee and Hendry counties, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary, is one of the largest Habitat affiliates in the country, having helped more than 1,200 families in Lee and Hendry counties become homeowners.
