Sanibel resident Tom Uhler, principal with Uhler & Vertich Financial Planners, has joined the board of directors of the Florida Cancer Specialists Foundation. The nonprofit organization offers assistance with living expenses for cancer patients in need.

One-time payments help those fighting cancer to concentrate on recovery rather than overdue rent, mortgage, electric or water bills. The foundation was established by a group of physicians from Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute.

“My wife, Linda, and I are both cancer survivors and patients of Florida Cancer Specialists,” said Uhler. “The foundation provides an important service to cancer patients who may already be overwhelmed with cancer diagnoses, treatments and insurance paperwork. I am happy for this chance to help with the living expenses of patients in need, so they can concentrate on fighting cancer.”

Uhler has more than three decades of experience in financial services in Southwest Florida and founded his independent registered investment advisory firm in 2002. He serves on the board of directors for The Southwest Florida Symphony Orchestra and United Way of Lee, Hendry and Glades counties and chaired the 2011-12 United Way fundraising campaign. He serves on the executive board and endowment investment committee for Southwest Florida Council, Boy Scouts of America and was a 2010 laureate of the Junior Achievement of Southwest Florida Lee County Business Hall of Fame.
