Still time to join CHR benefit tournament
Organizers of FGCU-Sanibel Invitational Golf Tournament at the Sanibel Island Golf Club say golfers can sign up for a limited number of spots as late as 7:30 a.m. Saturday.
“Join the fun and support a great cause,” said Richard Johnson, chair of the board for Community Housing & Resources (CHR).
The March 16 tournament is the inaugural event of what is expected to become an annual fundraiser to benefit CHR, a non-profit organization that since 1983 has been providing affordable housing to families and individuals who work in or serve the Sanibel Island community.
The course, formerly known as Beachview, is a favorite with local golfers and the $100 contribution to participate includes a round of golf, snacks and an awards luncheon. This is only a few dollars above the regular fee for playing the course during season.
The tournament tees off at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start and it’s all in good fun – no special level of skill is required. Players team up in foursomes with a member of the Florida Gulf Coast University men’s golf team or a local pro. Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams.
Players signed up so far include Craig Albert and David Wright from the San-Cap Community Bank; Doug Babcock (‘Tween Waters Inn); Don DeLuca (Royal Shell Vacations); realtors John and Ann Gee; and “Chef Karl” from Bailey’s Catering.
CHR relies on community support and donations from individuals and businesses, since rents are calculated based on residents’ ability to pay. Rental income does not cover such items as maintenance, refurbishment, landscaping or appliance repair.
“Sanibel’s economy depends on the people who provide services through retail and other businesses,” said Kelly Collini, CHR executive director. “We all benefit when the work force lives in the community and we are committed to providing housing of which the community and the residents can be proud.”
Not a golfer? Become a sponsor, with recognition on signage throughout the course. Consider joining these generous businesses and individuals: event sponsor ($2,500) Sanibel Captiva Community Bank; “Eagle” ($1,000) Bailey’s General Store; and “Birdie” ($500) Royal Shell and ‘Tween Waters Inn.
Tee or hole sponsors ($100) so far include: Island Pizza, Island BBQ, Sanibel Island Golf Club restaurant, Island Pharmacy, Cottages to Castles, Billy’s Bikes, Heidrick & Company Insurance, Tim Garmager (partner, Pierce Consultiing Partners), Coral Veterinary Clinic, Karen Aulino (Eric Pfeiffer Realty), Amanda Curren (Superior Title), realtors Rob & Robyn Moran, and Vice Mayor Mick Denham.
Miller and Budweiser distributors have signed on as beer sponsors.
