By Staff | Mar 1, 2013

At 3:49 p.m. Thursday, Cape Coral police responded to a serious injury crash in the 300 block of Del Prado Boulevard North, according to officials.

A 2003 Ford Expedition, driven by Mirza C. Navarro, 33, of 920 S.E. Sixth Court, was traveling southbound on Del Prado. At the intersection of Northeast Third Terrace, Navarro tried to turn left and crossed the northbound lanes, driving in front of a northbound Triumph motorcycle, driven by Alvin Lee Fails, 40, of 12380 Third St., Fort Myers.

The motorcycle struck the passenger’s side of the Expedition.

As a result of the impact, Fails was ejected off of the motorcycle. He was wearing a helmet at the time.

In the crash, the gas tank area of the motorcycle was compromised and caused both vehicles to catch fire.

Navarro nor his passenger, a juvenile boy, sustained injuries in the accident, officials reported.

Fails was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital in life-threatening condition. At 5:16 p.m., he died from his injuries.

A traffic homicide investigation is being conducted by Cape police.

The crash is not alcohol or drug related, according to officials.

Fails is the city’s eighth traffic fatality so far this year.
