Where did everyone go?
On Sunday, before sunset, we went for a bike ride together. The roads were eerie. No cars were out. We didn’t see a single child playing in any yards in the whole of Gumbo Limbo. No one was walking their dog. No one was jogging or exercise walking.
The place was empty. Silence, everywhere. Then we realized. Everyone was inside watching the Super Bowl!!!!!!
We didn’t. We’re pretty much against Gladiators being eaten by lions. Or lions being killed by Gladiators. Either way, it seems like a lot of tumult for something that is sensationally void of genuine socially redeeming value.
We already own almost everything the commercials wanted us to buy. And we don’t eat or drink most of the things the commercials wanted us to imbibe. We’re not ill and suffering from the impending diseases mentioned in some of the ads.
It was pleasant having the bay at the end of Dixie Beach to ourselves without boats or jet skis. We just had the sunset and it was lovely and orange.
I did think of where else, as a people, we could have used all that money that was spent on game day. Maybe some of it could have gone into stopping human trafficking? Or to help migrant workers? Or to preventing brain injuries including bike helmet education? Or, or, or?
What would be on your list?
