ABC Sale T-shirts are picture perfect

Contributed photo This year’s shirts, featuring a photo of an American white pelican, are a departure from past ABC Sale T-shirts that have involved prints of drawings or paintings by local artists. The pelican photo was taken by Jeff Morgan, a professional New York advertising photographer, who also has a home on Captiva. This shirt, as well as hats featuring the Captiva Civic Association logo, will be on sale for $20 weekday mornings at the Civic Association offices and on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon in front of the Captiva Post Office from now until the 2013 ABC Auction and dinner at the Sanctuary Golf Club on March 7.

After nearly four decades of ABC Sale T-shirts featuring the drawings and paintings of local artists, the 2013 Captiva Civic Association’s shirts are sporting something new and different.

This year’s shirts feature a dramatic composite photograph of an American white pelican soaring in front of billowing Florida clouds. The design has been created by professional New York advertising photographer Jeff Morgan.

Bob Brace, who is heading up sales of the shirts this year, said they will be on sale until the Assocation’s annual ABC Sale dinner on March 7 “if they don’t sell out before then.”

Morgan, a past president of the Civic Association, said of the picture adorning the shirt, “It’s a photograph I took of a white pelican one amazing day at the Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge when I got a whole bunch of great shots of white pelicans in flight. The one we picked for the shirt is the one we thought was the best.”

According to Morgan, the shot of the soaring pelican, taken against a clear blue sky, was combined using computer software with a dramatic cloud photo he once had taken on Captiva.

“This is the first year the T-shirt was ever done from a photo,” he explained, “although I did posterize it a bit.”

Morgan said he expects to create a large print of the composite photograph to auction at the Association’s annual ABC Sale, March 7, at the Sanctuary Golf Club.

In the past, ABC shirts have used prints of drawings or paintings by local artists such as Lauri Kaihlanen, featuring iconic Captiva landmarks.

Although he took the picture of the majestic pelican at Ding Darling on Sanibel, Morgan said it is appropriate for a Captiva t-shirt since the white pelicans have recently become frequent visitors to the Captiva area.

“The other day, I must have seen at least a hundred up by Bryant Bayou on Captiva where I live,” he said.

According to Brace, some Captivans have been collecting the t-shirts for decades. He predicted the white pelican shirt also will become a collector’s item.

The golden-yellow shirts, which come in sizes from youth small to adult double extra large, as well as hats with the Association’s logo on them, can be purchased for $20 each weekday mornings between 10 a.m. and noon at the Association office, 11550 Chapin Lane. They also are being sold in front of the Captiva Post Office on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon.

Money from sales of the shirts is used to fund the Captiva Civic Association’s many cultural and social activities aimed at providing meeting facilities for local groups, exhibit space for local artists, community library space, scholarships, housing for resident sheriff’s deputies , preservation of island ecology and a unique island ambiance.
