Renourished Lighthouse Beach tilled
A contractor hired by the city of Sanibel worked Monday afternoon and evening tilling beach sand at Lighthouse Beach in advance of the start of sea turtle nesting season.
As a requirement of the State Department of Environmental Protection permits for the beach renourishment project completed at Lighthouse Beach, the sand must be tilled to ensure it is not overly compacted and is of the appropriate compression to enable female sea turtles to excavate nest chambers in the beach sand to lay their eggs.
The work took approximately six hours to complete on the San Carlos Bay side of Lighthouse Beach. The gulfside was not affected by the work.
The city contract was part of the beach renourishment project and must be done this time of the year to also avoid interfering with shorebird nesting season, which starts Feb. 15 and runs until July.
