Bike crash fatality reported during Tour de Cape
A bicyclist taking part in Sunday morning’s Tour de Cape has died from injuries he suffered after he ran into another bike, lost control and fell, striking his head.
James Heneghan, 69, of 5408 S.W. 25 Place, Cape Coral, suffered life-threatening head injuries after he struck the rear tire of a bike directly in front of his in the 2800 block of Beach Parkway and was ejected onto the roadway, police said in a prepared statement issued Sunday afternoon.
Heneghan was airlifted to Lee Memorial Hospital where he died shortly before 2 p.m.
Based on witness accounts and evidence, Heneghan took his helmet off several minutes prior to the 10 a.m. accident and did not have it on when he crashed, police said.
The rider of the bike that was struck, John Pokorny, 66, of 2104 S.W. 30 Terrace, was not injured.
There were no signs of impairment in this traffic crash, police said.
