Bicyclist critically injured in crash at Del Prado intersection
A man on a bicycle was critically injured after he rode into the path of a vehicle at Del Prado Boulevard and Coral Point Drive Thursday.
Scott Clifford Van Deusen, 23, of 8099 College Parkway, Fort Myers, was trauma alerted to Lee Memorial Hospital with life-threatening head injuries following the accident, which occurred shortly before 5:30 p.m., according to a Cape Coral police report.
Van Deusen was riding north on the east sidewalk of Del Prado Boulevard in front of Walmart, the report states. Diana L. Scalise, 53, of 1319 S.E. 16 Terrace was driving west on Coral Point Drive, leaving the Walmart parking lot area.
According to witnesses, Scalise “had a solid green light” as Van Deusen rode his bicycle on the sidewalk. Van Deusen kept going north and drove into the roadway while in the crosswalk, riding in front of Scalise’s vehicle, which then struck the right side of the bike.
Van Deusen was ejected from the bike and came to rest in the middle of the intersection.
He under went surgery Thursday night, friends of the family said Friday.
Scalise was not injured.
There were no signs of impairment in this traffic crash, officials said.
