Bailey Road gets new surface
Having completed construction of a new bike path along Bailey Road, the city of Sanibel has addressed modifications of the roadway near the intersection with Periwinkle Way.
About 420 feet of Bailey Road was repaved this week from Periwinkle north to just past the Pond Apple Park trail crossing.
“In doing the shared use path this summer, the city has a sewer system lift station there that required a curve in the path,” said Keith Williams, Sanibel Public Works Director. “To keep adequate separation from the road, a curve had to be made on Bailey, too. The paving will help straighten out that curve.”
Better Roads Inc. is the contractor for the final project that is part of the city’s 2012 resurfacing effort. The project was expected to be completed by the end of this week.
Periwinkle, Causeway Boulevard, Lindgren Boulevard, Nerita Street, part of Tarpon Bay Road and a number of residential side streets also were repaved over the summer during the project.
The city also is gearing up for the 4th annual New Year’s Eve party at Sanibel Recreation Center. Tickets for the “Poppin’, Hoppin’ & Bubblin’ into 2013” gala are on sale at the Rec Center, 3880 Sanibel-Captiva Road.
The party starts at 8 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 31, until the doors close at 12:15 a.m. Tickets are $15 for adults in advance ($20 at the door), children age 7-17 are $12 ($15 at the door).
Food, beverages, games, dancing, a music DJ and midnight ball drop are just some of the activities to entertain guests.
“We had 700 people last year,” said event chairman Barry Roth. “It’s really a celebration of the community.”
Kids will delight in the antics of a magician, juggler and ventriloquist while adults are sure to enjoy the Bingo game with prizes valued at more than $9,000, and a 50/50 raffle. Bingo is limited to 75 seats and costs $85 per seat in advance (including admission) or $100 at the door.
Proceeds from the alcohol and tobacco-free event are donated to the Financial Assistance Program which helps island workers and residents who qualify financially for their children attending the Rec Center’s after-school program, camps and other activities.
