County renames tennis center

By Staff | May 11, 2012

The tennis center at Three Oaks Park has been renamed the Barbara Manzo Tennis Center at Three Oaks Park by order of the Lee County Commissioners at its May 1 board meeting.

The action honors Manzo who retired after 22 years of service as deputy director and director to the Lee County Parks & Recreation Department. She was named the department’s director in 2009. Deputy director Dave Harner replaces Manzo as director.

Lee County Parks consists of 250 staff positions with a $25 million budget and offers more than 29,400 acres of parks, preserves, facilities and other sites

The move to change the tennis facility’s name came from the Lee County Community Tennis Association board of directors.

“For the past 21 years, Barbara has distinguished herself as an advocate, innovator and architect of a model tennis program in Lee County,” said interim executive director Harriett Bohannon, who called the Three Oaks facility “a flagship tennis center.”

The 12-court center is located between Interstate 75 and Three Oaks Parkway, with a sound barrier blocking noise from the interstate. The Lee County Sports Authority recruits national tournaments to the site and it’s also the home for junior tournaments and many Lee County CTA lessons and programs.
