Sanibel council headed to recall?

By Staff | May 10, 2012

Dear Editor,

It looks like Sanibel is going to join the trend, and recall our present City Council. Why would anyone make such a statement? Isn’t it obvious?

Committee of the Island (COTI) (Island Reporter, April 27, Commentary) have voiced their disapproval of the recent appointment of a member to the Planning Commission. I personally have not seen any of their recall petitions. Maybe it was only a rumor.

For those of you who may not be familiar with COTI, see the following. It was formed to combat the influence of the Chamber of Commerce and the Board of Realtors, who as we all know, are a bunch of money grubbers who have no concern for the wellbeing of the island.

Without COTI, Sanibel would have been a Miami Beach. Just ask them. They are, as determined by the IRS, a Political Action Committee. In checking their web site you will not be notified of this fact until you request an application for membership. Their present membership is ???

COTI’s endorsed candidates did not do well in a past election, and they failed to endorse a candidate in our most recent election. Perhaps Sanibel voters were tired of a select few, with superior knowledge, advising them on what is best for the island. I know it is difficult for COTI not to be recognized as the guiding light for all of us, but elections have consequences.

If COTI is unhappy with our present situation they have the right to endorse future City Council candidates who follow their mandate.

In the meantime, cool it!
