If you are looking for a beautiful plant for Mother’s Day, or for bargains at a big two-day garage sale, you can support a local high school team going to a special event.

The Mariner High School Odyssey of the Mind Team is the only Lee County High School team competing in the world finals to be held in Iowa in late May.

But the group needs funds to get there, said Odyssey of the Mind coach Jackie Minich.

“Odyssey of the Mind promotes creative thinking, teamwork and problem solving skills from the elementary to collegiate level,” she said.

The local team placed first in the regional competition, then second in the state. Now it needs the community’s help to get them to the worlds.

“I’m extremely proud of the team,” said Mariner High Principal Brian Mangan. “I’m hoping the community supports these kids, all the way up to Iowa.”

Several local businesses have come forward to help in the effort.

The Downtowner Car Wash on Del Prado Boulevard is donating car wash vouchers the students will sell for $10 each, Home Depot is donating plants for the big plant sale and Il Primo Pizza is holding a special fund-raising night.

“We’re selling annuals for Mother’s Day and just for the home all this week and next week,” Minisch said. “We will be selling plants at Mariner High School. The Home Depot on Skyline is our sponsor, and they are donating the plants.

“We are also having a huge garage sale on Friday, May 11, and Saturday, May 12, at 5210 SW 12th Place in the Cape, where we will also be selling car wash tickets for $10 to the Downtowner Car Wash.”

The garage sale will feature toys, bikes, furniture, clothes, baby items and lots of miscellaneous items.

Concerning car wash tickets, if you can’t make the garage sale or get to the school to get them, Minisch said to call her at 826-8889.

“You can call me and I’ll deliver them,” she said.

Il Primo Pizza and Wing night is on Thursday, May 17, from 4 p.m. until close at the Il Primo on Santa Barbara Boulevard.

“They are sponsoring us, and we get a percentage of the evenings sales,” she said.

Team members include students Brittney Worst, Angela Minich, Kelly Bravard, Monica Amaya and Samantha Martin.

There will be 800 worldwide teams at the competition, an invaluable experience, all officials said.

Mariner High School is located at 701 Chiquita Blvd. The number is 772-3324. Il Primo Pizza and Wings is located at 2209 Santa Barbara Blvd.
