Nesting starts early

By Staff | May 4, 2012

The first sea turtle nest of the season on Sanibel was found on April 25. The first nest was found on Captiva on April 20. SCCF has started monitoring sea turtle nesting season that officially starts on May 1, but turtles began nesting early this year. This is the 20th year for the SCCF monitoring on Sanibel and Captiva Islands. All sea turtle species are protected under the U.S. Endangered Species Act and are either threatened or endangered. Please keep the following in mind to provide a safe beach for nesting and hatching: shield or turn off lights near the beach; take all beach furniture, tents, and umbrellas off the beach; fill any holes you dig; pick up trash on the beach; honor the leash law; do not approach or disturb nesting turtles; never take a flash photo of a sea turtle; and limit your use of flashlights on the beach at night.
