2nd prescribed burn at Refuge planned Saturday

By Staff | Mar 29, 2012

The J. N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge plans the second phase of a prescribed burn of the Botanical Site (South Unit) on Sanibel Island this Saturday.

Designed to reduce the likelihood of catastrophic wildfires and to help preserve the natural ecology of the area, the land to be burned is located west of Rabbit Road; north of West Gulf Drive; east of Gulf Pines Subdivision; and south of the Sanibel River.

Based on current weather forecasts, the refuge, Southern Florida and Caribbean Fire District of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service assisted by the Florida Forest Service, Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation, City of Sanibel and Sanibel Fire & Rescue plan this burn to take place on March 31 with a backup date of Sunday, April 1. If weather conditions are not favorable, then the prescribed burn will be postponed until further notice.

Residents and adjacent landowners will be notified prior to ignition.
