The official rededication ceremony for the Iwo Jima Statue will be Saturday, Feb. 25, at 10:30 a.m. The ceremony will be at the Veterans Memorial area in Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve in Cape Coral.

The keynote speaker is Lt. Gen. Dennis M. McCarthy, USMC retired. McCarthy is the former assistant secretary of defense and veterans affairs.

A number of dignitaries will attend including Cape Coral Mayor John Sullivan and fellow council members, State Rep. Gary Aubuchon and Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott. Pfc. Hector Cafferata, USMC Medal of Honor recipient, is a special guest. Additional VIPs may attend as well.

The Iwo Jima statue had become severely degraded over the years by the elements, and large chunks of the statue were being held together using improvised methods. Several groups joined together to raise funds to restore one of the few official replicas of the famous memorial created by Felix de Weldon. The city also contributed to the restoration costs.

The ceremony will include pipes and drums, an aviation flyover and a USMC color guard unit. Additional information will be provided to the media as the event date approaches.
