‘Dinner for Dreams’ fund raiser to benefit Make-A-Wish

By Staff | Feb 2, 2012

A couple of years ago then-new volunteer wish co-ordinator Coby Palmer became involved with his first Make-A-Wish project.

The child was 7 and his wish was to meet his hero, Olympic snowboarder Shaun White.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida sent the boy and his family to Utah where the child not only got to meet White, but got to take snowboarding lessons from the gold medalist.

“It was just something to get this amazing feeling of joy and accomplishment,” Palmer said of organizing the wish through to fruition. “There’s nothing that gives you that satisfaction, to be part of something special, and to change someone’s life. You can’t match that.”

Now, Palmer is involved in his first fund-raiser in hope of making dreams come true for other children who are facing a life-threatening illness.

The “Dinner for Dreams” will be held Friday, Feb. 10, from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Cape Coral Yacht Club.

Tickets to the event are $20 per person or $200 for a sponsorship table of eight. Admission includes a four-course dinner catered by Personal Touch Catering, a full evening of dance music provided by Midnight Sun Entertainment and the opportunity to take part in numerous raffles.

The ticket deadline is Wednesday. Money raised will stay within the Make-A-Wish chapter’s local service area.

“I’m doing this fund-raiser to help them grant wishes for local children,” Palmer said.

“The money’s going to a good cause,” he added. “You have to eat dinner anyway, you may as well help a good cause.”

It can cost up to $5,000 to grant one wish – children can ask to do almost anything, go almost anywhere.

Palmer said he’s hoping the Dinner for Dreams will raise at least $3,000.

“It’s the whole nine yards,” he said of wishes granted. “It’s life-changing for the families.”

More than 8,000 south Florida children have had their wishes granted since 1983.

In addition to ticket sales, Palmer still is accepting donations for the raffle prizes. He has more than 20 up for grabs so far, including a hotel stay on Fort Myers Beach, a suite and 10 tickets for a Fort Myers Miracle game, and Minnesota Twins memorabilia.
