An anonymous tip has led to the arrest of a Cape Coral man.

John J. Cruz, 36, was charged Saturday with two counts of grand theft.

On Friday, the Cape police released surveillance photographs from two separate thefts from the Super Target on Pine Island Road. Police were asking for the public’s help in identifying the man shown in the photos.

On Saturday, an anonymous citizen called in and provided Cruz’s name. Detectives obtained recent arrest photos of Cruz, which allegedly showed tattoos matching the ones on the man in the Target surveillance photos.

According to officials, a witness from the store also reportedly identified Cruz when showed a photo line-up as the man who stole the merchandise.

Cruz was located at his residence and taken into custody by police.

“The Cape Coral Police Department is grateful for the information provided by the public to solve this crime,” Lt. Tony Sizemore, the spokesman for the Cape police, wrote in a prepared statement released Monday.

“We have cultivated a strong public trust, where citizens know that if they get involved and help us, their information won’t be disregarded,” he said.
