Police arrest grandson after man found bludgeoned to death
Cape Coral police have arrested the grandson of a man whose body was found in a vehicle stopped near the intersection of Veterans Parkway and Del Prado Boulevard Monday.
Clinton Travis Drake, 19, faces charges of second degree murder in the death of John William Drake, 84, who was found bludgeoned to death in his 2004 Dodge pickup truck shortly after 4 p.m.
The 911 call reporting that a white male was slumped over the wheel at the intersection came in at 4:06 p.m.
Arriving officers discovered John Drake’s body inside.
Within minutes, officers from the 1st and 3rd Platoons as well as K9 officers and the Aviation Unit converged on the area, police said.
Police concentrated their search efforts to the neighborhood west of Del Prado after they received a call from a resident who said that they saw a man running through their neighborhood.
Meanwhile Major Crimes detectives and forensic personnel began their investigation at the area where the truck was found.
Clinton Drake was taken into custody in the 1200 Block of Southeast 26th Terrace, a short distance from the truck, at 5:17 p.m. Drake was brought to Cape Coral Police Headquarters where he confessed to detectives that he had killed his grandfather, police said.
The Cape Coral Police Department is working with the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office as the victim and suspect reside in Clewiston.
“First and foremost, we grieve for the Drake family tonight,” Lt. Tony Sizemore said in a statement prepared for press conference called for 11 p.m. Monday night. “They are going through an unspeakable tragedy; let’s not lose sight of that.”
He credited swift police work by the officers and supervisors of the 1st and 3rd Platoons as well as the K9 Unit and Aviation Units in the apprehension of a suspect reported to be “running the streets of Cape Coral” as well as the community for reporting the suspicious incident, which led to Clinton Drake’s arrest.
