Kyle L. Miller wrote a fictional children’s book featuring a Snowy Plover shorebird, a maverick ghost crab and 14 other birds commonly seen on coastal beaches.

Titled “Snowy Pea and the Ghost Crab,it tells the story of Snow Pea who is unable to hatch her eggs due to predation. The tiny bird lays three eggs on a barrier island off the Southwest coast of Florida. The entire group of characters form the Snow Pea Protection Plant to guard the nest for 24-hour days against predators.

This educational and entertaining book recently won the Florida Publishers Association’s 2011 President’s Silver Award in the category of Florida Children’s Fiction. Awarded annually, the Florida Publishers Association’s President’s Award’s include one Gold winner and two Silver winners. It is the most prestigious award provided by the publishing industry in Florida and is universally recognized as one of the publishing world’s premier seals of approval.

“I am honored and thrilled that Snowy Pea and the Ghost Crab was awarded the Silver medal by the Florida Publishers Association,said Miller. “Knowing the award entries were judged by three independent Florida librarians, makes this award exceptionally special.”

Snowy Pea, which was illustrated by Randon T. Eddy and published by Jungle House Publications, is an excellent book for children ages 7 to 11, who want to learn about the variety of wildlife along the seashore.

“I want to also give praise and credit to Randon T. Eddy, a well-known Sanibel artist, whose charming illustrations give the book depth, and true-to-character imagery that makes the story come alive,Miller said.

As avid wildlife supporter and author of a 2009 Eric Hoffer Award winner, “Dillo A Baby Armadillo’s Adventure on Sanibel Island, Miller is getting ready to publish her third book, “Trouper The True Adventures of a Blind Raccoon: The Beginning,” a true account of the rescue and rehabilitation of a physically challenged unique raccoon, now an animal ambassador for children’s wildlife education programs in South Florida.

“As a member since 2005, I can’t say enough about the Florida Publishers Association and their ongoing support and promotion of publishers, self-publishers and authors,” Miller concluded.

She will be signing copies of her books from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 26 at Toys Ahoy, located in Periwinkle Place on Sanibel. She will also be at Suncatcher’s Dream, 630 Tarpon Bay Road, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 27.
