Names selected for two new county schools

By Staff | Nov 22, 2011

The Lee County School Board approved the names of two schools, an elementary and middle school, in the East Zone that will open at the start of the 2012-2013 school year.

Those two schools will be named Tortuga Preserve Elementary School and Harns Marsh Middle School. The elementary school is located on Gunnery Road in Lehigh Acres and the middle school is located on site of Harns Marsh Elementary School, which is also located in Lehigh Acres.

The school board also approved a policy that would give authority to Superintendent Dr. Joseph Burke to approve the implementation of school uniforms at a newly established school for the first year of its operation.

“I enthusiastically support this,” board member Thomas Scott said. “I think it is the right thing to do.”

He said every school that he has visited where the students are already wearing school uniforms has a different feel to the campus.

Scott said when some of the peer pressure is taken off of the students for what clothing and shoes to wear, the focus changes to their studies.

“I am very supported of this and I would like to see it expanded further,” he said.
