Authorities seeking witnesses to fatal accident

By Staff | Oct 27, 2011

Local authorities are looking for witnesses to a fatal traffic accident Tuesday that left one woman dead and a Cape Coral man injured.

The crash occurred at 12:10 p.m. at the intersection of Lee Boulevard and Westgate Boulevard in Lehigh Acres, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Crystal M. Ruiz, 25, of Fort Myers, sustained fatal injuries in the accident.

Richard Thomas Mauro Jr., 42, was traveling east on Lee Boulevard in a Ford Explorer, while Ruiz was headed north on Westgate Boulevard in a Honda Accord. As Ruiz approached the intersection, she attempted to turn left onto Lee.

At the same time, Mauro tried to proceed through the intersection and the vehicles collided. The front of the Ford hit the left side of the Honda. Both of the vehicles rotated, with Mauro’s Ford eventually overturning onto its roof.

Ruiz and Mauro were each wearing their seat belt.

Mauro sustained minor injuries and was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital.

He had been discharged as of Thursday, hospital officials reported.

It is unknown what the colors of the traffic signals were at the time of the crash, so the FHP does not know which driver violated the signal. Anyone with information on the accident is asked to call the FHP at 344-1730, extension 136.

The traffic homicide investigation is ongoing.
