Cape Fire rescues four cats and a bird from burning home
Cape Fire crews rescued four cats and a bird from a kitchen fire in a home in the Southeast Cape Wednesday afternoon.
Unfortunately, four other household cats perished in the fire.
At 2:07 p.m., Cape Fire Dispatch received a 911 call reporting smoke coming from the roof of a home at 621 S.E. 1st Place. Fire crews with Station 2 arrived within five minutes to find a fire burning in the kitchen area. A burned, broken plastic water pipe helped keep the fire in check just long enough to enable firefighters to contain the fire to the kitchen and save the rest of the house. The fire was extinguished within minutes of arrival.
Firefighters conducted a primary search of the home and found eight pet cats and a bird in the family home. Two of the cats and the bird were alive, and firefighters were able to resuscitate two other cats. The four remaining cats died in the home.
The cause of the fire currently is under investigation.
