City property target of copper thieves

By Staff | Sep 29, 2011

The air conditioner at a city-owned duplex was apparently damaged when someone removed the copper wiring from the unit.

Cape Coral police responded Wednesday to a report of a copper theft in the 200 block of Southwest Fifth Street. Cape fire officials reported that the wiring from the outside unit was taken, rendering the air conditioner useless.

The damage is estimated at about $3,000. The wiring was worth $300.

Fire officials also told police that someone tried to gain access to both sides of the duplex by attempting to pry open the locks. The person apparently got past the dead bolt locks and door knob locks, but not the attached padlocks.

The damage to the doors is estimated at about $50, according to a report.
