St. Andrew Catholic School students will head back to the classrooms on Monday for a half day of school to open the 2011-2012 school year.

This year the classrooms will be equipped with new Apple computers for each teacher, due to a grant they received at the end of last year.

St. Andrew Catholic School Principal Sister Elizabeth Meegan said thanks to the grant, they were able to install Apple computers for the teachers, which will give them the opportunity to make use of everything the Smart Boards has to offer.

In addition, St. Andrew Catholic School will begin their first year of offering a pre-kindergarten 3-year-old program, which already has 11 children enrolled.

Meegan said the program is offered five days a week for parents who are working. Parents can drop off their children during the school day or after school.

“The goal, of course, is to begin the whole educational process and take the children where they are and begin to give them the skills they need to be successful in school,” she said.

The enrollment for St. Andrew school is up this year with 281 students, compared to 244 students at the beginning of the year. Meegan said although they saw a little bit of an increase in all the grades, the largest increase was for their middle school program.
