By Staff | Jun 15, 2011

“Ding" Days co-chairs, far right, Supervisory Refuge Ranger Toni Westland and DDWS Board Member Wendy Schnapp accept a $5,000 check from Doc Ford’s staff, from left, Marty Harrity, Dan Howes, Joe Harrity, Liz Harris, Mark Marinello, Raynauld Bentley, Brenda Harrity and Kris Zook.

Doc Ford’s Sanibel Rum Bar & Grille for the fourth consecutive year has donated $5,000 to “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society-Friends of the Refuge (DDWS) for its 2011 “Ding” Darling Days birding and eco-festival, which will draw more than 5,000 visitors to J. N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge the week of Oct. 16-22.

As a $5,000 donor, Doc Ford’s becomes a Roseate Spoonbill, a top level sponsor for “Ding” Days.

“‘Ding’ Darling is an economic driver for our island as well as a special place to educate people about the importance of conservation,” said Marty Harrity, co-owner of Doc Ford’s. “It is an honor and privilege to support the refuge and the Society for this event.”

Doc Ford’s joins Times of the Islands, Bailey’s General Store, The Cedar Chest, Island Sun, Jerry’s Foods, Sanibel Captiva Community Bank, Jim and Patty Sprankle, ‘Tween Waters Inn, West Wind Inn, Mike and Terry Baldwin, Art and Susan Cassell, Bank of the Islands, Sanibel-Captiva Kiwanis, SanibelSusan Realty Associates, The Clem Werner Family, Dan Hahn Custom Builders, George & Wendy’s Corner Grill, Thistle Lodge Beachfront Restaurant, and Winston and Barbara Spurgeon as sponsors of the 22nd annual community event.

“We are grateful for the incredible generosity of these businesses and individuals and hope to see others join with them as sponsors in helping ‘Ding’ Darling with this popular island event,” said Wendy Schnapp, committee co-chair. “So we’ve extended the original June 15 deadline to June 30.”

“Ding” Darling Days annually celebrates National Wildlife Refuge Week and the birthday of Jay “Ding” Darling, the refuge’s namesake and father of the Duck Stamp Program. The event is co-presented by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, DDWS and Tarpon Bay Explorers.

As a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, DDWS works to support J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge’s mission of conservation, wildlife and habitat protection, research, and public education through charitable donations and Refuge Nature Shop proceeds.
