Doris V. Anderson
Doris Anderson of Sanibel passed as she lived – privately, quietly and serenely – on April 15, 2011.
Doris dug her toes into Sanibel sand for the first time while on vacation at the Island Inn in the early 1960’s. By 1971, she had decided Sanibel would be her permanent home and purchased a lot on the quiet West end of the island. She left her home and career in New York at The Bowery Savings Bank in 1974 to become a full time island girl. She was immensely proud of the neat home she built here, and lovingly cared for it and her extensive garden of native plants, orchids and bromeliads completely on her own. Doris never met a plant she couldn’t save, a cat or dog she didn’t love, or faced a home construction problem she couldn’t tackle. She was a seemingly reserved woman with a fun, quirky sense of humor and a wide, deep variety of interests. She adored travel and was always anxious to learn something new and different.
She owned and operated the Stitchery Garden in the 70s and early 80s located at Scotty’s on Periwinkle Way. Many will remember her years of service at island banks including C & S Bank on Captiva and Sanibel, Nationsbank, and Bank of America.
She served her Sanibel community family in various positions for the Pine Tree Drive Association, ABWA and CROW for many years.
In the early 90s Doris found her true calling caring for the youngest members of the Sanibel Island community: children. She loved, cared for and tenderly taught a number of island babies and toddlers. They were the family she never had and she poured her heart and soul into them always remembering birthdays and important dates with a card and a thoughtful, little gift. She was always there for graduations and birthday parties – a wonderful, special grandmother and sweet friend to many. Her quiet, concerned presence will be so missed by all her island friends and family.
A memorial service will be held for Doris at the Sanibel Congregational United Church of Christ, located at 2050 Periwinkle Way, on Thursday, June 9 at 3 p.m. Please make donations in Doris’ memory to F.I.S.H. of Sanibel (472-4775).
