Rev. Deborah Kunkel

At a meeting of the congregation held on May 8, the Sanibel Congregational United Church of Christ elected The Rev. Deborah Kunkel to serve as their new Associate Pastor.

Pastor Kunkel was born and raised just north of Boston in Danvers, Ma. She is a second career minister who spent 12 years as a Real Estate Paralegal and Title Examiner before pursuing a call to ordained ministry. During those years, she served as Sunday School Superintendent and teacher, Christian Education Chair and youth chaperone at her home church in Haverhill, Ma.

Pastor Kunkel then moved to Maine with her husband Greg where she received her M.Div. from Bangor Theological Seminary. During her time as a student in Bangor she served as a licensed pastor in Thorndike, then Ellsworth Falls, Maine.

Currently, Pastor Kunkel is serving as the Pastor of the Pittsville (Wisconsin) United Church of Christ. Deb will join the Rev. Dr. John H. Danner, Senior Pastor, on the Sanibel Congregation’s pastoral team.

“It is important for me to be involved in building communities of faith across all ages that can love and support each other, who then share that love from God with the wider community and world,” Pastor Kunkel remarked. “Being in community that seeks to love each other feeds my spirit. And I hope that in turn, I help feed the loving spirit of that community as we minister together.”

Pastor Kunkel will begin her time at SCUCC on June 1 and is looking forward to working with her new congregation and acclimating to life on Sanibel.
