Cape High’s PotterFest will to raise money for ‘World Cup 2011’

The Cape Coral High School Quidditch team will hold a PotterFest on May 21 to raise money for the World Cup, which will be held in New York in November.
Cape Coral High School senior and event coordinator for the Cape High Quidditch team Taylor Welling said they have to raise a good amount of money so they can travel to New York, play in the World Cup, and stay in the city.
The festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Cape Coral High School practice field on May 21. Admission to the event is $5.
It will feature the team playing Quidditch games for spectators to watch, a life size chess board and various other games for adults and children to participate in that have a Harry Potter theme.
“I think it is going to be really fun,” she said, adding that everyone should come out to the event and enjoy themselves while supporting the team.
Welling said they will have traditional concession food and drinks like hot dogs, hamburgers and soda, along with Harry Potter themed food like butter beer, treacle tarts, chocolate frogs and pumpkin pasties.
The team will hold a car wash on Saturday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the 7-11 on the corner of Chiquita Boulevard and Cape Coral Parkway.
Welling said the money they make during the car wash will go towards the Potterfest.
The World Cup already has 80 teams signed up for the event, which Welling said mostly consists of college level teams. The Cape Coral High School team has 15 members and they will be allowed to bring a total of 20 members to the World Cup in November.
The team practices on Saturdays at Pelican Field to spend time on their passing skills, along with having scrimmages. She said they practice holding the broom in one hand while passing a ball in the other while running.
The International Quidditch Association, which was founded by Alex Benepe in 2007, has more than 400 colleges and 300 high schools involved.
The association promotes athletic participation in children and young adults.
