Master Gardener Lecture Series returns next week

By Staff | Mar 28, 2011

The 51st meeting of the Master Gardener Lecture Series will be held on Thursday, April 7 starting at 10 a.m. at the Sanibel Public Library.

The guest speaker, Dr. A.D. Ali, is the senior scientist at the Davey Tree Institute, which was founded in 1880. His lecture will focus on common pests and diseases of palms and trees and how to differentiate them from environmental effects such as weather, soil, rainfall and nutritional deficiencies. He will illustrate his topics with excellent color PowerPoint images, which should be valuable to us as we transition into our active growing season on Sanibel.

Dr. Ali has almost 30 years experience in the green industry, including a B.S., M.S. and Ph.D., and provides educational support to offices and field staff in seven southern states. His research has resulted in more than 350 published scientific papers and has presented programs at over 300 seminars, conferences and workshops.

In addition, Dr. Ali is an adjunct professor at Edison College and widely acknowledged as one of the most dynamic and articulate speakers in the Arborculture field. He has written news columns and appeared on radio and TV, both in Florida and California.

Dr. Ali will be accompanied by Jessica Harlow, a trained horticulturalist and forestry consultant with the Davey Resource Group.

The meeting will be free and open to the public. Seating is limited, so arriving early at the library, located at 770 Dunlop Road, is advised.
