Tribeca Salon expands staff, seeks niche in community

By Staff | Feb 8, 2011

Nicholas Melchiorre of Tribeca Salon stands at the front counter of the business, which recently relocated and expanded its staff.

In an era when some businesses are consolidating their services, staff and/or surroundings, Tribeca Salon is moving in the opposite direction.

The hair styling and color experts, who recently relocated to a larger space within The Village Shops shopping plaza, has added two staff members to their team: Stephen Carter, formerly of St. Petersburg, Fla., with 22 years of salon experience, and Alexandra Drouhard of Sanibel, who has worked in the industry for more than three years.

“Very few businesses are expanding in this economy,” said owner Domizio Melchiorre, who noted that Tribeca Salon is in its third year of operation on Sanibel. “We weren’t able to accommodate all of our customers needs at our previous facility, so we moved to a larger space.”

In addition to the two new hairdressers, Tribeca brought in a nail technician — Cheryl Smith — who offers natural nail care, manicures and pedicures under the same roof as the full-service hair salon.

“A lot of salons around here also offer spa services, but we’re not a spa,” said Melchiorre. “We are a hair salon, a unisex color salon and a nail salon. We may do only a few things, but we do them extraordinarily well.”

Melchiorre also mentioned that despite being located on an island known for a seasonal influx of tourists and part-time residents, Tribeca’s prices for their services are competitive with off-island hair stylists and nail technicians. A woman’s cut-and-style is $55; a women’s hair color is $60; a men’s cut-and-style is $20; manicures are $15 and pedicures are $40.

“We filled the void of a true ‘community’ hair salon when we came here,” he added. “And when season ends, we’ll still be here. The community supports us, and we have always supported great community organizations like The Onyx & Breezy Foundation, the American Cancer Society and other charitable groups here on the island. Together we can build our local economy, and we can sustain ourselves separately from off-island businesses.”

Tribeca Salon is located in The Village Shops, at 2340 Periwinkle Way on Sanibel. To schedule an appointment or for more information on services they provide, call 395-3800.
