Congress Jewelers to celebrate first anniversary

By Staff | Feb 8, 2011

Congress Jewelers will celebrate its first anniversary back under family ownership at Periwinkle Place on Sanibel Island with a three-day designer event, Friday through Saturday, Feb. 17 through 19.

The store’s favorite designers will be on hand with rare diamonds, South Seas pearls and brilliant gemstones, and shoppers will have the chance for cash savings and prizes using scratch-off cards available at the store. The Diamonds Are Wild anniversary event will be celebrated from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. each day, with entertainment, champagne and hors d’oeuvres.

In addition, a percentage of the proceeds from event sales will be used to establish an Edison State College scholarship in memory of the late Marian Garcia Perez, who served on the college’s foundation board with Melissa Congress.

“Marian, a product of Florida schools, was committed to education,” said Congress. “Her death last summer was a huge loss to Sanibel Island and, because she valued education so strongly, we felt honoring her with a scholarship would be a wonderful tribute.”

Garcia Perez was born in Havana and graduated from Clewiston High School, University of South Florida and the University of Miami School of Law. She practiced family law and volunteered with Sanibel-Captiva Cares, Sanibel School and the Pace Center for Girls.

The scholarship will be established through the Edison State College Foundation whose core values include the support of student enrollment and retention, and the attainment of high academic achievement. Founded in 1962, Edison State College serves Southwest Florida on three campuses.

Congress Jewelers, in its original Periwinkle Place location, specializes in an exclusive selection of elegant diamonds, colored gemstones, fine designer jewelry, Rolex timepieces and the Sealife by Congress collection, including the original Sanibel sandals.
