BIG ARTS presents a creativity seminar with Holly Maiz and Gini Jones that explores the experience of creative impulse through mask making.

In preparation for BIG ARTS annual fundraiser, Mardi Gras Celebration, on Monday, Feb. 28, this playshop invites participants to put on a different face, making and using masks to explore another side of yourself.

The Playshop begins this Friday, Feb. 4, and runs through Sunday, Feb. 6. Times vary.

“Laughter, sadness, excitement, ennui… all are part of the juice of life, the seeds of transformation,” Holly Maiz said. “Be a part of a weekend that embraces all experience and opens up new channels of expression.”

“The use of masks has been employed by humans throughout history… to represent, enhance, mystify or disguise,” explained Jones. “Even now in daily life, our choice of how we represent ourselves is a type of mask-play. In working directly with masks during this weekend, participants can explore this symbol of our ability to change.”

“Playshop” presents an opportunity for all adults interested in enhancing creativity, whether you consider yourself an artist or not. Group and individual experiences will include awareness practice, guided imagery and simple improvisation with movement, sound and language. Through playing together, these activities and energizing discussions will encourage flexibility in thinking, increased awareness and embodied presence, all of which are important for optimal aging, stress reduction, brain health, and enjoyment of life.

Holly Maiz is a bodymind psychotherapist with specialties in addiction, weight management, and optimal aging. On Sanibel she teaches both privately and in-group settings using body based practices including Yoga, Pilates and Qi Gong.
