Not a matter of either/or
To the editor,
The present editor of this publication (unlike his predecessor) has chosen to take a position on island issues through the use of editorials. This is his preogative and I welcome it. This does not mean that I agree with all his positions. To his credit, he welcomes all opinions
The editorial appearing in the Dec. 9 issue included the suggestion that the Lighthouse property might be used for the much-discussed telecommunications tower. Wouldn’t that be great? A gleaming metal tower with a flashing red light overpowering our most famous landmark.
The editorial appearing in the Jan. 6 issue presented a detailed summary of the status of the Dunlop Road Shared Use Path project. It included the comment, “Again, bike paths are nice, but not necessary.” I assume this statement was made to elicit further comments from readers. Bike paths, next to our beaches, are considered a major attraction for our tourists as well as our residents.
As I understand it, the city has budgeted substantial funds for upgrades and improvements, in addition to the $400,000 for the Dunlop Road improvements. It is not a matter of either/or, as the editorial suggests.
