Grace Whitehead

Former Sanibel resident Grace Rossiter Whitehead — founder with her husband, the late Don Whitehead, of the Island Reporter in 1973 and winner in her own right of the First City of Sanibel Founders Day Award — passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2011 at Cypress Lodge in Fort Myers.

Born on Sept. 10, 1918 and raised in an orphanage, she was 82 at the time of her death.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 17, 2011 at the

Sanibel Congregational United Church of Christ, 2050 Periwinkle Way. There

will be a later service to honor the scattering of her ashes.
