Include only local issues

By Staff | Jan 12, 2011

To the editor,

Over the past 15 years or so, I have submitted five letters to the Island Reporter, and two have been published. All related to local subjects concerning Sanibel Island. I understand the need to reject some letters simply because the volume of submissions is too large. However, over the past few months a few letters were published that had been submitted by an individual from Gilroy, Ca. These letters were rants about the Afghanistan war, the reactions to WikiLeaks and other topics that had no local relevancy.

I enjoy reading the letters in the Island Reporter, and often disagree with the opinion presented, but — in my view — the opinions should concern Sanibel (and Captiva). I have no interest in reading someone’s rantings about national issues in the Island Reporter. For that I read broader media, such as The Wall Street Journal, or even my hometown paper.

Consider this a plea to triage your letter publications to include only local issues.
