Sanibel Softball League’s playoff picture shaping up

By Staff | Dec 22, 2010

Sanctuary Island Electric

Last week in the Sanibel Softball League, the four teams to make the post-season playoff tournament were determined. With wins by both Sanctuary Island Electric and Williams and Williams we now know that those two teams plus the Sanibel Grill and Bay to Beach Bombers will meet in late January for the Championships. Final seeding is still up for grabs among these four teams.

In the first game last Wednesday night, Williams and Williams sent Aztec Plumbing’s hope of making the playoffs down the drain. Despite losing captain Joe Ramsey in the third inning to an injury, Williams and Williams were able to hold on to their early lead to win 22-15.

“We won that one for Captain Ramsey,” said the team.

Defending Champions the Sanibel Grill Wrecking Crew completely bulldozed over the Bay to Beach Bombers in a 21-20 massacre. Sanibel Grill rallied behind the pitching of captain Dale Gurnsey who came in as the seventh inning closer.

Team spokesman Mark Childers said, “Dale’s pitches are like his hair — you can admire it but you can’t touch it.”

Gurnsey pitched a shutout inning to help his team edge out a last minute win.

And in the final game of the evening, All Island got their glass kicked by Sanctuary Island Electric 26-22. Down by seven runs early in the game, Sanctuary never stopped feeling the positive energy. All Island Glass took an early seven run lead, but saw that slowly grinded away by the high-voltage offense of Sanctuary Electric.

The Sanibel Softball League plays every Wednesday night at the Sanibel Ball Fields. For more information, contact the Sanibel Recreation Center at 472-0345.
