Meet Seminole patchwork artist Che-Ke-Ka on Luminary Night

By Staff | Nov 30, 2010

Che-Ke-Ka and her Seminole Patchwork art are currently featured at the BIG Arts on Periwinkle Gallery & Gift Shop.

Che-Ke-Ka’s Seminole Patchwork Exhibit is open at BIG Arts on Periwinkle Gallery & Gift Shop, at 2244 Periwinkle Way, through Thursday, Dec. 8.

Colorful fabric wall hangings by Che-Ke-Ka tell stories with time-honored Seminole patchwork designs. Sewn in the traditional way, the designs were created from the early 1900s to the 1950s. The designs and symbols tell stories of everyday life for Seminoles living in the Florida Everglades.

Islanders and visitors are invited to meet Che-Ke-Ka at the artists reception during Sanibel Luminary Night on Friday, Dec. 3 from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

The BIG Arts on Periwinkle Gallery and Gift Shop reception sponsor is Three Crafty Ladies. Their phone number is 472-9700, and the exhibit will be open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
