Captiva resident and ballroom dancer Susan Scott recently returned from a national dance championship in Orlando, and while she didn’t score any top prizes this time, she’s getting ready to take Miami by storm in December.

“I was on the dance floor 209 times, but I didn’t get the trophy in Orlando — but I’m getting closer,” Scott said. “Our studio, The Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Fort Myers, won top studio in the country and my partner, David Flory, won top male teacher. Everybody did really well and it’s just so exciting.”

Currently, Scott is practicing for a five-day competition in Miami that begins on Dec. 1 and will be held at a hotel on South Beach where Fred Astaire used to dance.

“For Orlando, I had to learn 10 new international dances in just three weeks. It was a short period of time to learn ten new dances, but I’m working really hard to perfect them so I’ll be ready for Miami,” she said. “I’m very excited — this time I’m definitely bringing back the trophy!”

“Susan is such a pleasure to teach,” said Ganine Derleth, co-owner of the Fred Astaire Studio. “She’s lovely and talented — and she’s natural mimic. She can pick up any move we throw at her.”
