Hurricane Committee meets; plans for 2011 hurricane season

By Staff | Oct 20, 2010

Even though the end of the 2010 hurricane season is just over a month away from ending, the Captiva Hurricane Preparation and Response Committee met on Monday to get ready for 2011.

Among the committee’s many topics of conversation were organizing the Structural Safety Inspection (SSI) team

At the Captiva Community Panel the following day, committee member Doris Holzheimer gave an update.

“This season, we’re going to do an education program, probably in May,” Holzheimer said. “Dan Noah is willing to come back to do a SkyWarn training session and we’ve tentatively scheduled that for March 2. I really encourage people to come, even if you came before. He’s very good and I’m glad he’s willing to come back again.”

Holzheimer also said that the committee would not repeat the mass mailing they did in May, instructing Captivans about how to submit their homeowner’s authorization letters.

“We had a terrific response this year — over 600 properties provided their authorization letters,” Holzheimer said. “But the form is still on the website if you haven’t done it yet. You need to authorize anyone other than yourself that can come on your property and check it after a storm.”
