Island Democrats to conduct Potluck Dinner next week
On Thursday, Oct. 14 starting at 6 p.m., the Democratic Club of the Islands is holding its “Welcome Back” event at The Community House, located at 2173 Periwinkle Way.
The annual get-together, a Potluck Dinner, is held to renew old friendships, to learn about the club’s plans for its monthly events and to learn about how to get involved in grassroots Florida politics.
Entree meats and beverages will be provided by the club, and members are asked to contribute by bringing a dish to share.
The meeting will be an especially important one because, within days Floridians will be casting their votes voting for a wide variety of state and Federal office seekers – and important referendum issues like FairDistricts.
Our featured speaker will Bob Schaeffer, National Political Consultant, who will be discussing the constitutional amendments on the November ballot – all of great importance to Dems.
Widely known to us all are the Democratic Party candidates for the highest profile positions: Alex Sink for Governor, Dan Gelber for Attorney General and Kendrick Meek for U.S. Senator. Less well known to most of us, but no less important to us in Lee County are the candidates for many so-called ‘down-ticket’ offices, all of which will impact how we are governed on a more local – and therefore more immediate — manner.
The club is honored to have lined up a stellar cast of Democratic candidates for election in November to introduce or re-introduce themselves to the Sanibel electorate. The following candidates have accepted the club’s invitation (and more may follow) to speak about themselves and their qualifications:
• U.S. House of Representatives, 14th District – JIM ROACH
• Board of County Commissioners, District 2 – DEBBIE JORDAN
• State Senate, District 27 – KEVIN RADER
• State House, District 73 – COLE PEACOCK
Several candidates for judgeships and other non-partisan offices are expected to attend as well.
The formal comments from these candidates will be, necessarily, brief, but the more informative and important opportunities will be to meet and talk with these outstanding individuals one-on-one. Come and get informed about these candidates and their positions, decide who might best fit with your criteria for the offices that will be decided on Nov. 2.
Experience ‘up close and personal’ who merits your vote on Nov. 2 and who might excite you enough by their personages and their positions to motivate you to support them.
All DCI members are invited and strongly encouraged to come, as are any other Islanders who are interested in getting active in Democratic politics or who, as importantly, just want to become informed voters.
The Democratic Club of the Islands is an authorized organization of the Lee County Democratic Executive Committee, organized to stimulate interest in political and governmental affairs, to educate the electorate about issues, to further the ideals and principles of the Democratic Party, to support Democratic Party nominees in national, state and local campaigns and to foster good fellowship among Democrats on Sanibel and Captiva Islands.
