FMTC runners making final preparations for next week’s F.I.S.H. 10K

By Staff | Oct 5, 2010

Runners are gearing up all around the islands for another great event supported by the Fort Myers Track Club (FMTC). This time the FMTC is helping F.I.S.H. (Friends In Service Here) of Sanibel conduct their second annual “10K Race 4 F.I.S.H.” on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 7:30 a.m. which is sure to be an exciting day for everyone involved.

Putting on approximately 20 races a year, the FMTC is often seen working with many local charitable organizations by providing their technical expertise on high quality races. Members of the FMTC span all ages and running levels, enabling them to choose their preferred distance and terrain.

This time, many members are excitedly preparing for the F.I.S.H. 10K where they will not only get to run a beautiful new course along wildlife preserves, but will also raise money for a great cause.

Word spreads as more runners are spotted around the island getting ready for the race. This is no exception at the Sanibel City Hall, where we find city employees Mike Claney, Holly Downing and Roy Gibson sporting their well-worn running shoes, preparing for the event.

Running is not the only time you may find Downing outdoors. She is a biologist in the city’s Natural Resources Department and is always working to protect Sanibel’s beautiful environment — something which all of the runners will certainly enjoy during the race.

The path will take runners along a small tour of the island, running by varies shops as well as wild life preserves. Together with Claney and Gibson, the City Hall team is happy to be involved in F.I.S.H.’s annual event.

Keep watch for more islanders and teams in training for the F.I.S.H. 10K, which is expected to attract more than 500 runners this year.

F.I.S.H of Sanibel, Inc. is a non-profit volunteer organization assisting Sanibel and Captiva islanders and visitors with a wide range of services. For more than 29 years, the group has been a “neighbor helping neighbors” organization offering free human services such as transportation for medical appointments, meal delivery, health equipment, food pantry and emergency financial assistance.

The Walk-in-Center is located at 1630 Periwinkle Way, Unit B, on Sanibel (next to Pfeiffer Realty Group) and is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. F.I.S.H. can be contacted by calling 472 4775.
