By Staff | Oct 4, 2010

“Songs For A New World” will open BIG Arts’ 2010-11 season at the Herb Strauss Schoolhouse Theater on Thursday, Oct. 14 with an opening night pre-show reception at 7 p.m.

A collection of songs connected by the theme of living life to the fullest, “Songs For A New World” has been captivating audiences since its opening Off-Broadway in 1995. Soaring melodies and irresistible rhythms mark a wide range of songs influenced by multiple genres including jazz, pop, and gospel.

This musical runs Oct. 14 through Nov. 6. Performances are Tuesday through Saturday, and start at 8 p.m. Tickets are $30 for adults, $20 for child 16 and under.

“It’s about one moment. It’s about hitting the wall and having to make a choice,” said Jason Robert Brown, the Tony Award-winning composer-lyricist whose hit musicals also include “Parade” and “The Last Five Years.”

Brown transports his audience from the deck of a 1492 Spanish sailing ship, to 1775 colonial America with a flag maker at work, to present day in the Bronx, where a young man dreams of life as a basketball star. Contains some adult language.

“Songs For A New World” is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI), and is directed by Galloway Stevens. The show stars Joe Donnelly, Erin Edelle, Michael Fisher and Mara Jill Herman. Musical and Casting Director is Justin P. Cowan.

“Songs For A New World” is supported by The Herb Strauss Schoolhouse Theater Season Sponsor The Sanibel Captiva Trust Company and Sponsor Ellington’s Jazz Bar and Restaurant.
